About

Hi, I’m Sarah Frey—it’s so nice to meet you, and I’m truly honored that you’ve taken the time to be here. Thank you for stopping by.
My journey into this field began with my own experiences. I’ve been connected to therapy since I was five years old, starting with a support group for children who had experienced loss. Over the years, I’ve grown deeply appreciative of the healing, support, and growth that counseling makes possible—which is why I became a therapist myself.

Outside of my work, I’ve shared my life with my partner and our dog, Jake, who proudly runs the household. He may not appear on camera, but I can guarantee you’ll hear him—he’s very vocal, and I apologize in advance!
As a therapist, I am honest, compassionate, dependable, curious, and kind. People often describe me as “loud,” but I prefer to think of it as enthusiasm—and I bring that same energy into my work. I don’t shy away from hard truths or gently pushing you when needed, because part of my job is to notice what you might not see and help you move toward the version of yourself you want to be. I’ll always balance honesty with empathy and care. You can also expect humor in our sessions—bad jokes included—because I believe laughter is healing.
Above all, I will show up for you. My role is to support you, challenge you, and walk alongside you in your growth. It’s a privilege to do this work, and I look forward to being part of your journey.

Experience

I hold a M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, am a Board-Certified Counselor, and have a specialized certification in grief counseling. I have been licensed as a Mental Health Counselor since 2022.
Helping others has always been at the core of who I am. Over the years, I’ve worked in a variety of roles—whether helping people find homes, advocating for crime victims with the NYPD, or supporting individuals in recovery. For seven years, I dedicated much of my professional life to substance use treatment, working at outpatient centers in both New York City and New Jersey. During that time, I learned countless lessons, but one stands out the most: the incredible resilience of people in the face of struggle.
In recent years, I have found a special passion and calling in grief and loss counseling. Through my own experiences with grief, I’ve come to deeply understand how profoundly it can shape our lives—and how healing it can be to have a safe space to process those emotions. Grief and loss are universal experiences, yet each journey is unique. It is my privilege to walk alongside clients as they navigate those tender spaces.
I am also passionate about suicide prevention and awareness. I have volunteered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and have participated in their Overnight Walk for several years, honoring those lost and supporting those who continue to struggle.

Jake 🐾

Allow me to introduce you to Jake! He’s a Morkie (a Maltese–Yorkie mix) who my partner and I adopted in January of 2020. Jake came from Texas, where he had been living in a home with over 150 other dogs. Jake has been through a lot of trauma, and he is by far the most unique and interesting dog I’ve ever had. While he is unbelievably cute, he’s not a big fan of being touched—much to my dismay!

So, while you’ll almost certainly hear him loudly saying “hello” during our time together, you’ll only catch a glimpse of him on special occasions.

FAQ'S

What are your rates? What are acceptable forms of payment?

Individual sessions are $225I accept venmo, credit cards and FSA/HSA.I also understand the difficulties of accessing care due to financial hardships. I offer a limited number of sliding scale spots. Please reach out for more information.

Do you take insurance?

I accept Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield. If you plan to self-pay, you can always check your insurance for out-of-network benefits. These benefits may be covered in part or fully by your insurance company. In instances where out-of-network benefits are covered, you will be responsible for payment at the time of service. Your insurance will reimburse you. I will provide monthly superbills which then can be used to submit to your insurance provider. Here are some questions to help guide you with your conversation with your provider:

  • Do I have “out-of network" mental health insurance benefits?

  • What is my deductible and how is it met?

  • What, if any, is my “co-insurance”?

  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

  • What is the coverage per session?

  • Is approval required from my primary care doctor?

How is therapy conducted?

We will meet virtually via a HIPAA compliant telehealth space. Jake may also join the sessions!

What Modalities do you use?

I utilize several different modalities during the session. I am of the mindset that there is not one specific way to address any issue. The golden standard modality is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT. I may also utilize Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness. You will see bits of all of these during our time together.

Are there benefits to paying out of pocket?

Yes! This may be preferable as it allows for more freedom and privacy. There are implications of using insurance.Insurance companies mandate a diagnosis, oversee your health record, and may seek access to your information while in therapy. They also may limit your coverage to a set number of therapy sessions per year, regardless of what you are going through. You may also be limited to in-network providers which can restrict your chances of finding the right fit for you. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

“After bouncing around between a few therapists but never really finding someone I clicked with, connecting with Sarah was a breath of fresh air. She’s easy to talk to, asks the hard questions (even when I don’t want her to), and always has good insight on whatever it is I bring to the table that week. It’s been a couple years now and I’m so glad I found her. I appreciate the way she’s able to point out patterns and themes from my life and past that I often failed to notice. I look forward to our weekly sessions, which always leave me feeling more grounded and with a sense of clarity that was lacking just an hour beforehand.”
